Lately, I've found myself looking at the world and wondering: Am I too mad at so many? The division, the quick judgments, the constant cultural noise—it can feel overwhelming. And with the recent passing of Dolly Parton, that feeling of loss cuts even deeper. We didn't just lose a legendary entertainer; we lost a blueprint for how to treat one another.

My connection to Dolly goes back to the very beginning, deeply embedded into my childhood through the two very different grandmothers who helped raise me

I spent a lot of my early life living with one of my grandmothers. For us, the day didn't officially start until WPOC, Baltimore’s country music radio station, was turned on. Every morning as I got ready for school, that station was the soundtrack to our kitchen, and inevitably, Dolly’s unmistakable voice would roll across the airwave.

My other grandmother was a die-hard Kenny Rogers fanatic. And as anyone from that era knows, you simply cannot say the name Kenny Rogers without thinking of Dolly Parton. Between the two of them, Dolly was the sparkling, musical thread tying my family together.

Then came the movies. The very first movie I vividly remember watching was The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Looking back, it’s quite an introduction to Dolly’s acting chops for a kid! But to this day, it remains one of my absolute favorite films. It was big, it was funny, and it was unapologetically her.

But beyond the music, the massive hair, and the rhinestones, what truly stuck with me was the wisdom of Dolly Parton.

Her philosophy was incredibly simple but profoundly difficult for most people to execute: Live by the golden rule. Treat others with respect and dignity. Embrace people and let them be their true selves.

Dolly led first with love, never judgment. She built a massive empire and a legendary career not by tearing people down or retreating into political corners, but by welcoming absolutely everyone to her table. She had an uncanny ability to look at a deeply flawed world and choose radical acceptance.

This is a lesson from Dolly Parton that I fear America has lost

As we mourn her passing and remember everything she gave us, the best way to honor her isn't just by playing her records. It is by taking up her banner. It’s time we remember how to love our neighbors. It’s time we appreciate each other, celebrate our differences instead of weaponizing them, and above all, lead with love
